Brian Guichon has had enough of all the cowboy boot
badmouthing balderdash he says he gets an earful of during Stampede. Boots are
in his blood: his family has been in the western wear business since 1901, when
his great grandfather founded Riley & McCormick Western Stores. Guichon
says come every July he hears the same thing from Calgarians. "I'll be
at a social event and someone will inevitably complain that Stampede is coming
and 'I have to drag my boots out, they're so uncomfy,' " Guichon says,
sighing. After decades of hearing his beloved boots maligned and accused of
being ill-fitting, he says he's putting his foot down. "They can be comfortable
and fashionable," he says. Apparently, we pseudo cowboys and girls just
aren't wearing them right. According to Guichon, "They should fit like
a firm handshake on the foot." And the reason why they cause aches and
pains is easily remedied with a hammer. "Cowboy boots have a high arch
-- there's a shank that runs through the middle of the foot ... if you're not
used to that, it can feel like you're standing on a picket fence. But all you
need to do is tap it down with a little hammer and adjust it downward to lower
it a little," he says. Then voila, you're good to go.
